DCby1 is a brand new initiative aimed at getting young children to visit the dentist before their 1st birthday. With 40% of children under 5 needing treatment for tooth decay there’s never been a more important time to begin a child’s relationship with their dentist.
Your child’s dental care begins well before their adult teeth show, and the benefits of developing an understanding of the connection between their health and their mouth are important and essential:
- Combat Tooth Decay
- Children across the UK are having to have teeth removed and polished to tackle tooth decay. Check-ups make sure any signs are spotted early.
- Practice Good Hygiene
- Adding brushing and cleaning into a child’s routine turns the process into a habit, one that can last a lifetime.
- Spotting Any Concerns
- Everyone’s mouth is unique, so having a dental professional spot any abnormalities or issues that could get worse without intervention.
- Building Trust
- Visits to the dentist can often be anxious events for children, but if we can gain a relationship right from the start, we can build trust and assure a child that we are here to help!
- NHS Treatment is FREE for Under 18s
- If you are Under 18, and especially if you are Under 1 year old, your treatment is FREE on the NHS.
If the benefits aren’t already getting you itching to book your little one’s visit with us, it might be because you are curious about what our team will do and what happens if your child won’t cooperate with the dentist.
Here’s what the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) have to say:
How will the dentist examine my child?
Sometimes the best way to look into a baby’s mouth is to carry out a lap-to-lap examination, when the baby is lowered backwards from your lap into the lap of the dentist. This may give the dentist a good view of baby’s mouth.
What happens if my child won’t open their mouth?
Don’t worry if your child doesn’t want to open their mouth. Just taking your child to the dentist and starting to establish a pattern of dental appointments is valuable. Book to return in a few months and hopefully your baby will want to open their mouth on the next visit.
The BSPD have so much more to say about DCby1, and we encourage you to take a look at what many of the top voices in Dentistry say about the initiative here.
We think DCby1 is a great idea, and we’re looking forward to welcoming you and your family in to Hydean Dental Practice. If you want more information, or want to book an appointment, just click here.
